After our long weekend, I will be showing OTOMO Katsuhiro's "Memories" ["last" name capitolized to remind you family and personal name are switched in Japan.]
Here's a great blurb on the movie from this web page: http://195.138.195.241/animanga/am007p01.htm
At last, Memories is there to come up to every manga fan's expectations. And the waiting was becoming unbearable since ROUJIN Z in 1991 (and some years before, of course...AKIRA). OTOMO presents here three different stories based on his own work but directed by different teams.
In MAGNETIC ROSE, directed by KOJI KORIMOTO, some astronauts are lured into a space cemetery by an opera singer's voice. They find there a rose shaped space ship where they have to face unsettling simulacra.
STINK BOMB, directed by TENSAI OKAMURA, is the story of an unlucky young chemist. Having caught a heavy cold, he tries experimental pills to get rid of it. The effect is disastrous. His own body becomes a bacteriological weapon, and a nauseating one! He begins to emit a deadly green fog, and nothing can stop it.
CANNON FODDER, directed by KATSUHIRO OTOMO himself, will be a surprise for a lot of people. It is not what one usually expect from the Japanese animation. Here is the story of a sad and greyish city where there is only one occupation: cannonade. Those really big cannons are the only thing that matters. Meanwhile, nobody dares ask who is the enemy...
The incredible Memories soundtrack is made of three different parts too, and it ends with an irrepressible techno track. It was difficult not to get up and dance in the theatre: with the CD you will be free to do it. The composers are YOKO KANNO (Please save my earth), JUN MIYAKE, HIROYUKI NAGASHIKA and TAKKYU ISHINO.

are lovely movie posters
This is more of an "artful" film. It's not a "popular" kind of film, in the mainstream sense. The animation will take your breath away, though, and the music is beautiful, fun, and strange in places.
One of my favorites.
My sub is very dark. Depressingly so. I'm tracking down a script, but may not have access to a LD of the movie... I'll keep you posted on our options.
What: Memories
When: wednesday, June 2nd
Where: Frogtown screaming room at Pixar.
How: yet to be determined...
See you then!
